The Models of Evangelism

Jesus—the Perfect Model for Evangelism

  • Jesus is the only perfect _MODEL_ we have for our evangelizing.

  • Jesus is the perfect model _EVANGELIST_.

  • Biblical references to Jesus as our perfect model include:

  • John 13:15-16

  • John 14:12__

  • 1 Cor. 11:1___

  • Philippians 2:5-11

  • John 20:21-22  “Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.  (22)  And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost

  • Implications of Jesus as the perfect model include:

  • It provides us with a model to __EVALUATE__ all other models, even ourselves.

  • It requires us to take with absolute seriousness the reality of Christ’s _INCARNATION_.

  • It forces us to see ourselves as an _EXTENSION_ of the incarnation.

  • We cannot be like Jesus in our own strength; a greater power than ourselves is required to implement the _IMITATION_ of Christ.

Three Aspects of Paul’s Model of Evangelism

  • Paul’s evangelizing was characterized by _INCLUSIVENESS_, _INTENTIONALITY_ and _INTEGRITY_.

  • Paul’s evangelism was inclusive in its:

  • ACCOMMODATION – Jews & Gentiles; all of those in need (Gal. 2:1-10)

  • OBJECT – Jesus Christ

  • MEANS – That “whosoever” might be saved

  • Paul’s evangelism was intentional in its _STYLE_.

1 Corinthians 9:19-23  For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.  (20)  And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;  (21)  To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.  (22)  To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.  (23)  And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.

  • The integrity of Paul’s evangelism can be found in the words of 1 Corinthians 9:21 “under the _LAW_ of Christ” which could be paraphrased as: “Not being an __OUTLAW_ of God, but an _IN-LAW_ of Christ.”

  • Evangelism without the element of integrity can _SHIPWRECK_ a church and _SABATOGE_ lives.

Seven Characteristics of a Layperson as a Model for Evangelism

  • April 21,1855: It was a layperson, Edward Kimball that _INTRODUCED_ D.L. Moody to Jesus.

  • It was Kimball, a layperson that had a _NATURAL_  _POINT_ _OF_ _CONTACT__ with Moody.

  • This model shows how a layperson, Kimball took the initiative in _SEEKING_  _OUT_ Moody.

  • Kimball was tempted _NOT_  _TO_  _GO_.

  • Kimball asked Moody to make a clear break with his old _LIFE_  _OF_  _SIN_ and commit himself unconditionally to _JESUS_.

  • Words of D.L. Moody - "I recollect that my teacher came around behind the counter of the shop I was at work in, and put his hand upon my shoulder, and talked to me about Christ and my soul. I had not felt that I had a soul till then. I said to myself: 'this is a very strange thing. Here is a man who never saw me till lately, and he is weeping over my sins, and I never shed a tear for them.' But I understand it now, and know what it is to have a passion for men's souls and weep over their sins. I don't remember what he said, but I can feel the power of that man's hand on my shoulder tonight. It was not long after that I was brought into the Kingdom of God." (A Passion for Souls, Lyle Dorsett, pg. 47)

  • In addition, a layperson must urge the new believer to say yes to following through with _BAPTISM_, attending a _LOCAL_  CHURCH_, and pursuing a life of _DISCIPLESHIP .

  • Laypersons who witness to the lost start a _CHAIN_  _REACTION_ of evangelism that continues.

The Motives for Evangelism (Part 1)

Why Should We Evangelize?

  • We evangelize because the _LOVE_ of Christ “constraineth” (controls) us (2 Corinthians 5:14).

  • This is Christ’s love for us and not our love for _HIM_.

  • AGAPE   love originates with God, never with humankind.

  • Our motives often are mixed with _EROS_ and _PHILOS_ love.

  • It is possible for Christians to be _MOTIVATED_ by eros love or philos love.

  • There is no higher motivation for evangelization than _AGAPE_ love.

  • _AGAPE_ love is a no-strings-attached, unmerited love.

  • God’s love _IS_  _NOT_ some beautiful detached emotion.

  • God’s love motivates us to _TELL_  _OTHERS_ about it.

  • God’s love motivates us to love the world with deeds of _LOVE_, _JUSTICE,  and _MERCY_.

  • Mother Teresa was right when she said, “True love _HURTS_.”

  • God’s love motivates us to be a _LIVING_ demonstration of that love.

  • D.L. Moody believed that there is no _POWER_ where there is no _LOVE_.

Why Should We Make Disciples?

  • We make disciples because Christ’s love _DEMANDS_ it and he himself _COMMANDS_ it. (Matt. 28:16-20)

  • Acts 1:8 lifts up five basic truths:

  • The _HOLY _  _SPIRIT_ initiates, supervises, energizes and accomplishes the purpose of God in building the church.

  • The _APOSTLES_ of Jesus Christ are the representatives of the church of Jesus Christ and the initial agents of the Holy Spirit.

  • _WITNESSING__ is to be the major means of accomplishing the divine purpose.

  • _JESUS_  _CHRIST_ is the content of the Christian message.

  • The _WORLD_ is to become the sphere of God’s gracious operations and gospel witnessing.

  • The _AUTHORITY_ of the risen Christ

  • Authority (exousia) literally means “_OUT   _OF_  _BEING_.”

  • Jesus claims all authority because he had been _RAISED_ from the grave and triumphed over _DEATH_.

  • The _COMMAND_ of Christ

  • Mission in the Old Testament was _CENTRIPETAL_(a come mentality)_; whereas in the New Testament it is _CENTRIFUGAL_( a go mentality)_.

  • Non-Christian Facts

  • Multitudes of them are already adherents of non-Christian _RELIGIONS_.

  • It is important that we seek to convert tribal people and animists to Christ before that are converted to one of the _NON_ - _CHRISTIAN_ faiths.

  • Approximately one billion of the three billion non-Christians can be evangelized by near-neighbor _CHRISTIAN  .

  • One billion Christians are only __NOMINAL__ believers in Christ.

  • The _PROMISE_ of Christ’s presence

  • He made it possible for his disciples to disciple the nations through his _PRESENCE_ with them.

  • The Great Commission would be _IMPOSSIBLE_ without the presence of Christ with us in the person of the Holy Spirit.

  • Ways in which the Great Commission is subverted

  • If we _PROFESSIONALIZE _ it, we subvert it.

  • If we prioritize _BAPTIZING_ over _TEACHING_, we subvert it.

  • There are at least two aspects to making disciples that ought to concern us: making _NEW_ disciples and making _TRUE_ disciples.

  • If we limit Christ’s _AUTHORITY_ only to the spiritual realm of life, we subvert it.
